The Battlefords received a touch of old-world class and sophistication May 19, as Saskatoon Opera brought The Barber of Seville to Logie Hall at Third Avenue United Church. The event, organized by Battleford Mayor Chris Odishaw, served as a fundraiser for the Opera House and a reminder of what might be once it is finished its renovations. Nearly every seat in the building was filled. Odishaw remarked to Town Council May 22 that a number of residents also gave him cheques for the Opera House renovation personally. Together with raffle ticket sales, a total of $6,200 was raised in the evening. The event marks the second time Saskatoon Opera has come to the Battlefords for an opera house fundraiser. In May 2011, they performed Mozart’s Odyssey. This year’s event was specially tailored to those with little opera experience. It was sung in English instead of the original Italian, abridged to about a third of its normal length of three hours and performed with a single piano rather than a full orchestra. A comedic opera, it was also filled with a great deal of slapstick humour, keeping the audience laughing.
