Saturday was a big day for the Allen Sapp Gallery, which held a special opening reception June 9 for a new exhibition at the gallery. The exhibition is titled Nohkum – Grandmother, showing off Allen Sapp’s paintings of his grandmother or “Nohkum”, Maggie Soonias. According to the gallery’s promotional material, the paintings “help bring together the voices of First Nations women to share their wisdom and teachings.” The reception featured presentations including Daphie Pooyak, who spoke on the role of women, and Ross Paskemin, presenting the role of the drum.
