I’m just reminding readers it is only five days until Valentine’s Day. There are plenty of choices for flowers, cards, candy or gift certificates available from businesses in Unity.
I would like to wish a happy birthday to my mom. Her example in life has led us all to use the mandate “WWSD,” what would Sophie do.
While I am in the greeting mode, I want to send special get well wishes to Keith, my biggest fan from Maidstone.

A “Treat your Sweet” fundraiser for Unite for a Miracle is taking place Feb. 11. The evening features supper, silent auction and the entertainment of Brad Johner and the Johner boys. A reminder to let Cherie Wagner know if a group or individual is hosting a fundraising event and she will post it to their Facebook page.
A Celebrate Unity evening featuring supper, brief program of recognition for recipients and entertainment by the Duelling Pianos takes place March 6. The ticket deadline will be around Feb. 22. Contact Unity Credit Union, Helena Long or Geraldine Barrett for details.
The annual Oilperson’s Bonspiel, including a free dance, is running from March 2-5 at the Unity Curling club.
The Unity Skating club is hosting a funfest in February as well as an ice carnival March 5.
Each week I have passed along a little reminder to extend thanks to important people in our community. This week, I think we all owe thanks to business owners. Not only are they setting up shop in our community to enable us to have multiple products and services, they support numerous community events and activities through sponsorship, prizes or even hands-on help for the event itself. For this, we say thank you.
Did you know UCHS has a robotics team? Working with robots has taken place the last two years and this year the crew is into serious competition. The team is small, consisting of Dallas Spendelow, Marco Sin, and Dawson Jensen, but highly motivated to maneouver and program robots. Robotics requires problem-solving skills for both mechanical functioning and programming.
The team has had one competition Jan. 20, where they placed second in the driver skills category. The next competition is March 4, which allows the team time to improve upon their original design.
Their other robot is called a SumoBot and the competition is a sumo competition between robots and teams across the province. This competition is hosted by Sask. Polytechnic and features more than 150 teams.
UCHS also has a new archery program and the team travelled to Smoky Lake, Alta. last weekend for their first tournament and will attend another Feb. 25.
UCHS basketball teams are preparing for district and regional playdowns. Next weekend, senior curling teams will head to district playdowns and regional playdowns are March 3-4. Junior curlers are still working towards improvement before their districts in Spiritwood March 1-2.
Unity Public School continues with their Friday Telemiracle fundraising efforts. Tomorrow will be gum chewing day, Feb. 14 will be red and pink day and Feb. 16 is movie and popcorn day. Choral speaking and choir groups have started practising for music festival. Feb. 17 is the Grade 4-6 ski trip to Table Mountain. And, students will enjoy a week off for February break starting with family day Feb. 20.
St. Peter’s School choir will be singing for Sunday mass March 5. There is also a brunch and bingo on this Sunday. Students and instructors are busy getting ready for the annual Unity Music Festival. Some of the grades, as well as the choir and band, will be participating. The festival will take place the week of April 3-7.
The hockey rink had a terrific addition to their schedule this week when the SJHL Battlefords North Stars and the Kindersley Klippers held a neutral site game in Unity on Feb. 8 hosted by Unity Minor Hockey. February will be the busiest hockey month at the rink as all divisions have entered into provincial and league playoffs.
At the curling club, there is a short lull in February before the next two big events take place — the annual Oilperson’s Bonspiel coming up first weekend in March and the Bramiche Farms Ladies’ Open March 17-19.
Coffee row folks are throwing out some theories about what will happen first in spring – harvest of last year’s crop or seeding the new crop. Some operations may be doing a little of both. Pig spleen reading or the groundhog doesn’t hold a candle to the weather predictions made by this experienced panel. Rowers also are enjoying the action at the rink. They are always thankful we live in such an active community. So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next time …
