Once again, it was a solemn occasion as the women who were the victims of the Montreal Massacre were remembered at the Territorial Place Mall Cafe.

Dec. 6 marked the 25th anniversary of the shootings at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal. A moment of silence was held in memory of the 14 women who were killed in that massacre.

The event was hosted by Catholic Family Services’ Family Violence Outreach Program, Battlefords Interval House and the Battlefords and District Co-op Friday. Rose buttons in support of remembrance and action on violence against women were available, and there was complimentary coffee and cake. There was also information offered on the issue of violence against women.

Erin Woytiuk, family violence outreach co-ordinator at Catholic Family Services, believes some progress has been made.

“I hope with awareness today that things have changed and are currently changing in our society, with awareness of services that are available within our communities in Canada that things are continuing to change,” Woytiuk said.

She said she believes there has been an improvement, but “it still continues to be an issue,” she acknowledged.

“I think that we’re headed towards a good direction. I think a daily conversation needs to be had in our homes and in our government, with the agencies that we serve, to have that as the number one topic,” Woytiuk said.
