The adults in North Battleford had their say in the 2016 municipal election, but if it were only students under 18 who had voted, the results would have been much different.

Guy Turcotte, Steve Cormons and Herman Bugler Jr. would have been elected to council seats if the students had their say, earning seats alongside Don Buglas, Kelli Hawtin and Kevin Steinborn.

Results came in from four North Battleford schools as part of the 2016 Student Vote initiative. The Student Vote is conducted to provide students under the voting age the opportunity to experience voting and learn about how democracy and government works.

Students marked their ballots in voting booths set up at schools across the province, to closely simulate how an election is run.

According to the results for North Battleford released by Student Vote, Buglas topped the student vote with 115 votes. Hawtin had 112, Steinborn 99, Bugler 84, Cormons 74 and Turcotte 66.

The “unsuccessful” candidates for council were Darren Olson with 64, Don Salie 61, Wayne Ray 58, Greg Lightfoot 57, Kent Lindgren 55, Len Taylor 53, Cathy Richardson 52, Grace Lang 47 and Colin Evans 41.
