Founded March 20, 1946, the Unity Lions Club is preparing to celebrate their 70th anniversary.

The club serves multiple roles in the community. This year’s roster includes 23 members, seven of whom have been members for more than 20 years.

With their motto simply stating “We Serve,” they exemplify this motto repeatedly in the services and funding they offer to the community. The Lions Club offers their services to more than 10 events a year, serving as gatekeepers at various events as well as bartending. They also host 10 to 15 fundraisers per year.

In the past five years, the Unity Lions have donated $50,000 to the new Unity Credit Union Aquatic Centre and their support reaches into all aspects of the community benefiting citizens of all ages.

Since 1990, the Unity Lions club has funded over $80,000 in various services, projects, groups and individuals in need.

Lions membership is open to anyone 18 years or older and they are always looking for new members to help them to continue to fulfill many roles in the community. The club holds approximately 19 meetings at year, held on the second and fourth Mondays of the month at the Adanac Hall, enjoying supper with their meetings. The benefits of belonging to a Lions Club are many — good meals, effective meetings, quality membership, fellowship, community involvement, leadership skills, education, opportunities, pride of accomplishment, recognition, sharing responsibility and international fellowship.

The Lions have stood the test of time and are thrilled to be celebrating their 70th anniversary March 25 with supper and entertainment by Daryl and Saskia. The event will be held at the community centre starting with supper at 6 p.m. followed by their anniversary program at 7 p.m. with entertainment to follow around 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available from any Lions Club member or by calling 306-228-9745 or 306-228-3753.
