The beginning of hockey season signals the end of football season, as the Crusaders beat Martensville 19-7 in one of the year coldest home games of the year so far.

The weather caused the Crusaders to run the ball more than they typically would, and coach Bruce Yockey credited Declan Robbins with a good game and the offensive line for creating holes.

Martensville’s quarterback and receivers had difficulty connecting, and the Crusaders’ pass coverage held their opponents to only one score.

Leading 13-7 in the fourth quarter, Dexter Cameron made a great one-handed catch in Martensville territory before Blaise Sieben punched the ball in for a touchdown a couple attempts later.

In the game’s last few drives, Martensville couldn’t advance much past midfield. Before the game ended, penalties seemed to move the ball more than plays.

Yockey said middle linebacker Zack Wells had a solid game, and praised the team’s effort during practice.

“They worked hard, hung in there, and battled through to the end,” Yockey said.

Who plays who in playoff games, and where the games will take place, will be determined after the Meadow Lake vs. Kindersley game.
