Bright smiles and friendly faces adorned the Speers Recreation Center Dec. 10 as the community hosted their annual Christmas party for the children.

The evening was free of charge.

Approximately 65, from the very young to seniors, enjoyed an evening of merriment. Children from as far as Battleford and surrounding areas such as Hafford attended. Residents from the Oasis Care Home also joined in the festivities.

The evening began with board games. Everyone of all ages joined in to start the evening.

Pizza was served buffet style. Volunteers also went around after to serve the tables. Chocolates and oranges were passed around the tables. Hot chocolate, tea and coffee were also available to add warmth to the chilly evening.

Sugar cookies were decorated with much flair and creativity. Green and red and silver sparkles turned them into something special for each artist.

After the treats the children held a nativity pageant. The colour and energy from the children dressed in traditional holiday costume helped to bring the spirit of the holidays to all in attendance. Everyone joined in with the children to sing traditional carols. Music was led by the piano playing of Phyllis Cunnigham. A large fast paced game of musical chairs ensued.

The highlight of the evening was the arrival of Santa Claus. Children rushed to greet him as he came in the door. Big and small lined up for a chance to give their Christmas wish to St. Nick. Santa took time to greet all his fans and after gave them a gift bag filled with many treats and goodies to head home with.

Blair Jackson, president of the Speers Recreation Board extended holiday greetings.

"Merry Christmas and happy New Year to everyone in the community. Thank you for the tremendous support this year," he said.

The Speers Rec Center is a wonderful facility, built with the help of the Kinesmen in 1981. The facility is available for your next event. To book an event contact Glenis Oliver at 246-2005.

Thank you to all the volunteers and people behind the scenes who gave of their time to make the holiday party such a festive community event.
