Attempted hole-in-one within inches at Unity Fun Day of Golf

Fantastic weather complemented another big event in Unity.

Fantastic weather complemented another big event in Unity. The annual Fun Day of Golf at the Unity Golf Course was host to over 120 golfers in efforts to raise funds for the UFC (Unity Facilities Committee, representing the ground floor hall and new swimming pool). The hole-in-one contest did not have a winner again this year, however, organizer Pete Gartner tells me there was a within-inches shot.

The UFC was also thrilled to announce that Unity Credit Union has offered a $250,000 commitment to the fundraising efforts in return for naming rights on the new swimming pool. All in all, this event was well organized, well received and, as a result, successful.

This Sunday the club plays host to the annual Candace Heit memorial run. This is the third year for this event and it gets more popular each year.

Candace was a well-known and loved young lady who passed away tragically in a car accident. Her parents wanted a legacy to remember her by. Because she loved many sports, including running, they decided to start up this annual event with the additional aspiration of fundraising to expand the walking paths in Unity for young and old alike.

Pasta night in conjunction with this event is Saturday at 6 p.m. at the event site, with guest speaker, Judy Warick. The cost is $15 and run packages for the next day can be picked up. Run packages are $40 for adults and $20 for students with a t-shirt included. Organizers will be accepting entries right up until race date.

Race times are 8 a.m. for 21 km and the three-person relay (7 km each), 9 a.m. for 10 km and 10 a.m. for 5 km. Organizers are expecting over 100 runners, similar to last year's numbers.

All proceeds from this annual event are headed towards a paved walking path, with the first 2 km ready for construction following this event. A memorial bench in honour of Candace will line the beginnings of this path.

Organizers offer a light lunch for all racers at a minimal cost. Make sure to call Terra Heitt at 228-2532 or Donna Boser at 228-2181 if you want more information on this annual event.

The Terry Fox Run is quickly approaching. The run will also be on Sunday, at 1 p.m., starting and finishing at the Anglican Church hall. Dan the Muffin Man will provide goodies after your walk, there will be Terry Fox merchandise for sale before, during and after the walk and there will be prize draws for participants.

And if you are in the mood to take in even more action Sunday, the Paw Park will hold their grand opening from 1 - 5 p.m. This new facility, which has been in the works for the past couple of years, opens its gates in the northwest corner of town, towards the cemetery and just before the CP tracks, on the right-hand side of the road. Bring your dogs for a run in their new off-leash dog park. Organizers will be selling smokies with a drink for $5.

Unity Skating Club will hold their registration night on Sept. 22 from 6:30 - 8 p.m. in the rink lobby. The club is hoping to expand on past success.

Unity Public School is busy this month. Enrolment this year is 172, which is up from the previous year. Their cross-country runners are competing in several meets throughout the month and have had to endure some big heat but have fared well in their endeavours. School photos were slated for Sept. 15th in the morning. And we anxiously await the first edition of the UPS yearbook due out soon.

St. Peter's School welcomed 144 students this year. They had opening mass with their new priest, Father Johny Mangalath. They also have students participating in the cross-country meets in our region, so good luck to these kids. St. Peter's will be collecting pop tabs again for the Tabs for Tots program. Thank you for your continued support of this program. Mrs. Janice Hepting is leading the intensive French program at St. Peter's this year.

Welcome week at Unity High School was this week. This fun week long of events included a barbecue Monday, pyjama day Tuesday along with a breakfast sponsored by Unity Credit Union, school photo day Wednesday and their annual chili cook-off, jersey day and Terry Fox Run Thursday. Friday, welcome week is being capped off with school colours day, a season opening pep rally and a Warriors football home game against John Paul II.

Unity Minor Football is up and running Sundays from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. for flag football and a longer session for Grades 7 and 8 tackle football. If you can't get enough football on your television, come out and watch the beginnings of greatness on the Warrior and UPS fields. Also mark Sept. 24 on your calendars for the annual Unity Minor Football day which will include minor football games, a Warrior rookie game as well as the pass, punt, and kick competitions.

Registration continues for the trade show held the last weekend in September. Something new for the fall fair portion of the show is the sponsorship of grand aggregate baskets to encourage kids to participate. Material was distributed through the schools as well as posters put up around town to encourage the young folk to be part of this annual event.

Registration for 3-on-3 hockey is still on, so please contact the town office or Minor Hockey president Curtis Dyck to ensure your child is registered.

Coffee row folks are chatting about the never-ending topic of the Riders and their season, especially the banjo bowl win with Coach Miller returning, as well as fan favourite Andy Fantuz. The hot weather and the nice weather that is helping along the harvest season always brings a flurry of coffee talk. And so again you can see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week ...
