Fall chores starting for both farmers and 'lake people'

Already the birds are bunching up and the hummingbirds are drinking heavily at the feeders in preparation for the trip south. Like it or not, fall is here. The days are getting shorter, the evenings are getting cooler and the crops - both grain and hay - are beginning to be cut. Why does summer pass so quickly?

With that in mind we are beginning to bid adieu to some of the 'lake people' who are already closing up the cottages for the season. So far we have had no frost to frustrate water lines and farmers alike! It might be well to keep in mind that the little creatures are also looking for places to winter so it would be a good idea to clean up piles of debris and to close up open basement windows to detract mice and skunks. How do we detract raccoons?

As the season gets busier we wish the farmers a good harvest and a safe harvest. Now might be the time to once again consider where that food comes from before it hits the supermarket shelves.

Aug. 27 was a very busy day in Rabbit Lake as the board of trade once again sponsored the annual Rabbit Lake Day. About 150 people enjoyed a beautiful fall day taking in all the events. The Rabbit Lake Senior Sunrise Circle and the Rabbit Lake and District Museum hosted a breakfast of pancakes, ham, eggs and coffee. While the breakfast was on, various residents of the village opened up shop with their yard sales and at the Rabbit Lake Community Hall there was a display of quilts of many kinds - cross-stitch, folk painting, chainmail, petit point - and the artwork of local artists Gail Loehndorf and Donna German. In addition to all this the Rabbit Lake Library held a book sale in the community hall.

At about 10 a.m., the bunnock tournament began with several teams registered. Doug and Dorreen Lamb and Wayne Moore along with other helpers organized and ran the tournament. Lunch was provided at the Community Hall with Curtis McNabb, Danny and Crystal Wright and Lesley Salisbury, representing the Rabbit Lake Recreation Centre, doing the barbecuing. Trevor Pauls provided music for the day. All and all it was a great day in the village. Hats off to the Board of Trade for their willingness to organize this annual day.

Winners of the bunnock tournament were:

A event winners: Ron Tracksell, Janel Tracksell, Austin Tracksell and Dallas Tracksell from Macklin, Sask.; they won $250. A Event runners-up were Doug Lamb, Doreen Lamb, Albert Colbe and Jean McNabb who shared $200.

The B event winners were Cam McDonald, Murray McDonald, Jaden McDonald and John Krahn, who won $200. The B event second place prize of $100 went to Gordon Nelson, Colleen Nelson, Shaun Nelson and Hayden Nelson of Crescent Beach.

The C event winners were Austin Drachsler, Barry Sherman, Monte Sherman and Tristan Presescky, who won $60. The second prize of $50 in the C event were Bob Gray, Bob Dobni, Rachelle Dobni and Sharon Pierce of Crescent Beach.

Get well wishes go out to Bertha Horn, who is in hospital in Prince Albert.
