The 15th annual summer tradition of the Northern Horizons art tour is coming up on Saturday and Sunday.
The self-guided tour of various locations in the local area takes place between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. both days. Those with a creative spirit will have an opportunity to visit the studios of many gifted local artists.
Taking advantage of the beautiful scenery that surrounds the studios, the set your own pace atmosphere over the span of two full days accommodates all interested viewers. Those with less time, or a specific site they wish to see, can travel on the back roads and observe the sights and sounds that act as inspiration for many of the pieces displayed throughout the tour.
A passport incentive is once again being offered. Passports can be picked up at any of the locations throughout the tour and stamps are received at each location visited. Those with a complete passport at the end of the tour can enter to win $100 towards any purchase from a Northern Horizons vendor. In addition, door prizes are scattered throughout the festivities.
This year’s special guest artist is Lucille Scott, who will be appearing in Glaslyn to showcase her original art, specializing in unique twists on natural surfaces. Lorraine Beardsworth will be appearing at the same location with her work in many different media. Mark Seabrook Photography will be seen in Glaslyn as well, showcasing the work of the academically distinguished photographer with a passion for landscapes.
The rural trail will have its fair share of accolades as well. Heading east, travellers will be able to follow the sunrise signs leading them to artists such as Barb Janzen’s Buffalo Charlie, who uses her signature, personally developed recipe of pure buffalo tallow and shows through her craft one of the ways we can make healthy tweaks to better the quality of our lives by always ensuring we know exactly what goes on our skin. The rugs, made by local Mennonite women are practical, and Janzen ensures the proceeds go to charity.
Lavonne Dick of Portraits and More will also be in the RM of Medstead where she will showcase her pencil or graphite portraits of people. Lavonne also does work from photographs and takes pride in her garden and inherited loom. In the same area will be Dorothy Schmidt of Shady Lane Art Studio with oil paintings that capture the countryside seen along the tour.
Debbie Dzialo, the cook for the Medstead store’s school year Hot Lunch Wednesdays, will be just outside of Glenbush with a homemade meal at 11 a.m. and traditional perogies, cabbage rolls and baking available for purchase. Her Ukrainian craft work will be displayed including embroidery and decorated egg work.
In Medstead, Aaron Johnson will present his rustic furnishings, using each material as its own expression and creating a variety of interesting pieces. Johnson will be at the Medstead Arena along with some of his local photography with unique, handmade frames. Kristen Stuart will be highlighting specialty woodwork just north of Highway 3.
The event is an annual tradition that ties the local landscape together with the creativity of our local area from many different perspectives. Through the use of distance in between stops and openness of the time for viewing, this art show displays much of what distinguishes this area of Saskatchewan in its culture and creative drive.
