Mackenzie Houk was the winner of the Spirit of Youth Award at Marsden Jubilee School.

The gymnasium at Marsden Jubilee School was crowded the afternoon of June 25, as friends and family members gathered to celebrate the success of the student body during the 2012-13 academic year. Principal Lisa Morgan was the MC for the program which served as the kindergarten graduation, a farewell to the Grade 6 students, who will be attending high school in Neilburg in the fall, and an awards day.

First up on the agenda was the introduction of the Grade 6 students who will be going on to broaden their horizons in the new environment in September. These students were: Jacob Biensch, Hunter LeDrew, Jake Paziuk, William Sorenson, Mackenzie Houk, Travis Morgan and Charyssa Riddoch. They led in the singing of O Canada.

Miss Harper led the kindergarten students in their graduation exercises. This included a grand march song, a video and a presentation of a diploma to each student. Heading into Grade 1 in the fall are Desiree Allen, James Fouhse, Quinten Johnson, Mason LaClare, JJ O'Neill, Liam Benoit, Noah Gleize, Kaydon Koedyk, Lisa McGladdery and Kienna Proctor.

The Spirit of Youth Award was presented to Mackenzie Houk. This award is given to a Grade 6 student who demonstrates a great attitude and school spirit. Mackenzie was always willing to help, no matter what was asked of her. She is someone for other students to look up to as her attitude is always positive, no matter what challenges she faces.

Medals were officially presented to Dustin Zweifel, Ashlyn Loy and Jacob Biensch as they were winners in their various events at the Grade 4 to 6 Tri-Meet. Tobyn Gordon also received a medal for attending the I Can games in Dorintosh and representing Marsden there.

Principal Morgan presented Charyssa Riddoch, Hunter LeDew and Mehaliah Fouldes with the moneys they won in a contest sponsored by the Lloydminster Archives to help them celebrate their 110th anniversary. The girls wrote an essay about Franklin Foster and won a $100 prize which was divided amongst them.

Awards were presented to the winners of the Legion's Remembrance Day poster, poetry and essay competition, who did not receive these at the Nov. 11 ceremonies.

The Allan Craig Award was presented to Jacob Biensch by Miss Harper. Allan Craig was a long-time resident of the Lashburn area. He loved many aspects of social studies. When he died, he made a provision in his will for the top Grade 6 student, at each school within the Northwest School Division, to receive a small engraved plaque and an inscribed social studies book. Jacob came to class every day, participating in all social projects. He thought about each unit and didn't hesitate to ask questions to gain more knowledge.

The Bonnie Scott Memorial Art Award was presented to Hunter LeDrew. This award is given annually in memory of Bonnie Scott who was a big asset to Marsden Jubilee School and the entire community. In honour of Bonnie, the art award is presented to a student who has displayed not only talent in the visual arts area but also a love for creating, as Bonnie had a love for both.

Hunter shows her artistic abilities during visual arts class and in all other subject areas. She demonstrates patience and care when she is asked to illustrate her thinking and ideas. This award includes a variety of art supplies that will encourage her talent.

The final award was the Most Improved Grade 6 Student. This award was presented by Karrie Blackbeard on behalf of the Marsden Jubilee School Community Council. It goes to a student who has shown improvement either in social or academic areas. This year, the award went to Jake Paziuk who showed great improvement academically. He has always had the ability to achieve and this year he has accomplished just that.

Principal Morgan presented honour roll certificates to Grade 5 students Aaron Harder and Ashlyn Loy and Jacob Biensch and Travis Morgan, Charyssa Riddoch and William Sorenson from Grade 6. Next year the look of the honour roll will be changed as the marking system for report cards will be different as they will be outcome-based.

Principal Morgan said, "It is my privilege to recognize our students. They have all worked hard and we congratulate all of them. We believe they are the best! These students received the honour roll for being very consistent in doing quality work throughout the entire year."

Interspersed throughout the program were student presentations. There was a short drama by the Grade 1s and 2s and the various students in Grades 3, 4, and 5 gave an interactive PowerPoint presentation, on the smart board, about an animal they had chosen to study.

The final item on the program was a farewell to the Grade 6 students. They each received a plaque, and a video presentation was shown with their baby photographs and other images of them growing up into the fine young people they are today.
