Museum, Legion asking for community's support

Grrrrr. Winter - this is not fun! Weather warnings, snowfall warnings, slippery sections whether walking or driving. I am still waiting for the Winter Wonderland scenario.

There was an impressive array of artwork on display and for sale at the Art Maniacs, local artists, show and sale at the Unity hotel/restaurant Nov. 17.

Grrrrr. Winter - this is not fun! Weather warnings, snowfall warnings, slippery sections whether walking or driving. I am still waiting for the Winter Wonderland scenario.

Pancake brunches are on again at the museum! Museum volunteers are cooking up Sunday brunch. From Nov. 18 through to April 28, 2013, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., museum volunteers offer a hot brunch at the Adanac Hall on the museum grounds for only $6 a person.

Don't forget to get your tickets on the local Legion raffle. The club is now raffling off a replica Saskatchewan Roughrider helmet autographed by George Reed and Don Narcisse. We all appreciate the Legion hall in our community as well as the work of Legion members and veterans in our annual Remembrance Day Services. One small way to recognize their efforts is by supporting their fundraisers.

At UCHS, the senior boys' volleyball team was the last to compete as they headed to regionals in Biggar Nov. 17 weekend. After winning their first two games, they came up against stiff competition in playoffs and were eliminated from a provincial berth, ending the volleyball season for all teams at UCHS for the year. Next up for UCHS is basketball season, as well as the drama club's productions Dec. 11 and 12. The school also is in the midst of Movember activities.

Forget the whiny NHL dispute. The local arena is alive with hockey action on a regular basis. Teams in all divisions are playing regularly, including both a midget A and a midget AA team. The Miners are on the road to rebuilding and, with an all-new executive and numerous committed players to the team, things are looking up for senior hockey in Unity. Come down to the rink and enjoy live hockey action, visiting a neighbor or having a bite to eat. Might I add, Daymon's rink burger recipe is a delicious one; you might want to try it out.

Rider loss devastation turned to Grey Cup elation as siblings Shawn Bonogofski (Pam Dandefer) and Crystal Delfrari (Bonogofski), and husband Brad, coincidentally both won an online contest as two of only seven names drawn to win a complete package to the 100th anniversary of Grey Cup in Toronto.

Congratulations to coach Eric MacDonald, a member of the local RCMP, who coaches and trains participants in the Unity Mixed Martial Arts Club. The club travelled to Red Deer Nov. 10 to compete. In only its second year, the team did very well, bringing home one second place for Bryton McGonigle in men's novice 185 pound class and two thirds -- Trace Sperle in men's novice, 145 lb class and Tanner Burr in youth intermediate. MacDonald himself also competed in the tournament, earning a third in men's advanced heavyweight class.

Congratulations also to Jeff Bridgeman who travelled to Auckland, New Zealand to compete in international triathlon last month. Although disappointed with his race time, Bridgeman was thrilled with the overall experience of the event. Jeff marvelled at the sight of the 20 kilometre bike route and five-kilometre running loop (both which were done twice) being completely lined with spectators. Bridgeman qualified last year to represent Canada at the event and has been training ever since. Congratulations, Jeff!

A unique fundraiser was held at the local theatre to benefit the Unity Community Resource Centre. Wine and cheese were followed by a movie, as a great way to gather with the girls for a night.

The Unity & District Chamber of Commerce is headed into the Christmas promotion. The Bundle of Bucks promotion will be out soon offering "shop local" incentives.

There will be some excitement downtown to take part in, Dec. 6. After the Winterlights parade was sidelined, Unity Credit Union began a Winter Wonderland carnival. This year other folks have come on board to promote the spirit of Christmas and community. Such events as carolling, goodies, tree decorating, etc., will be featured. Watch for details on all the fun upcoming for this date.

All hunters, the annual scoring night is Dec. 15 at the Agroplex. Doors open at 4 p.m. Contact Dave Ganter at 228-2901 for more details. Watch for the upcoming annual wildlife supper Feb. 2, 2013.

The annual Christmas Service of Remembrance to honour the memory of loved ones and friends will be Dec. 2 at 2:30 p.m., with a prelude of carols beginning at 2 p.m. This is a new date and time, so be sure to mark it on your calendar.

Remember to log on to the Reader's Digest website to vote for Unity as one of Canada's most interesting towns. Resident Laura Gardiner submitted the nomination; now it is up to everyone to vote on it. Winning communities will receive a cash prize to help with a community project.

Coffee row folks, although sad that the road to the100th Grey Cup does not include our beloved Riders, still share their pride in how far this team has come in one year with new coaching and new talent on the field. Hockey talk revolves around the local arena action rather than the ridiculous soap opera going on with the "other guys." Weather whatnots are also a regular topic of discussion. So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week ...
