People's choice cow calf pairs kick off Fall Fair

The 22nd annual Edam Fall Fair was held in the Edam Community Centre Oct. 26 and 27. The event started with the People's Choice Cow Calf Pair class Friday evening. In conjunction with this class was the Friday appreciation night.

The event started with the People's Choice Cow Calf Pair class Friday evening. In conjunction with this class was the Friday appreciation night. Winning this class was the entry of George LaClare, with reserve going to Andy Russett. Third went to Gerald Latendresse's entry and fourth to Jullion Bros. all of Edam. The average price for these heifers was $905.45. Winning the draw for the heifer of their choice was Bill LaClare choosing to take home the heifer from the Roach Ranching (Darryl Roach) entry. There were also several door prizes drawn that evening.

Winners were: Gerald Latendresse, Andy Russett, Josh Tyler, Steven Seabrook, Brian McCaffrey, Roy MacAngus, Melissa Weitzel, Anne Latendresse, Joe Cole, Stan Walterhouse, Doug Marjoram, Kim Blanchette, Leif Davidson, Joan McCaffrey, Dwayne McCaffrey, Don Cole, Bobby Blanchette, Conrad Seabrook, Dorothy Barr, Kyra Johnston, George LaClare, Trent McNab, Mark McFarlane, Randy Russet, Joey LaClare, Mega Baillargeon, Bryn Christopher and Dwayne Kobes.

Saturday dawned with a ranch style breakfast prepared and served by the Edam Volunteer Fire Department. The annual trade and craft show and sale started at 9 a.m. and continued until 4 p.m. with all tables available filled. A good crowd visited throughout the day. A bun lunch was prepared and served by the Edam First Responders starting at 11 a.m. The cattle show commenced at 9:30 a.m. with Judge Barry Hall of Craven and ring person Brandi Kobes of Edam. Calling the classes to the ring were Henri Blaquiere and Gerald Latendresse. Behind the scenes, doing the paper work, keeping the prizes at hand and running smoothly were Karen McCaffrey and Lisa Blaquiere.

Winning the classes for the day were: Rancher's Choice Steer: Grand - Randy Russett, Edam; Reserve - Little Willow Ranch (Harland Family), Frenchman Butte; third - George LaClare, Edam; fourth - Andrew Russett, Edam. There were 15 steers in this class. Average price during the sale for this class was $1,129.33.

Prospect Steer: Grand - Bill LaClare, Edam; Reserve - RRD Ranch (Leah Allen), Maidstone; third - RRD Ranch/Naomi Commandeur (Leah Allen), Maidstone; fourth - Randy Russet, Edam. Seven steers were shown. Average price of these steers was $980.83 with an overall average for the steers being $1,086.90.

Rancher's Choice Open Replacement Heifer (23 calves): Grand - Jeanine O'Regan, Edam; Reserve - Andrew Russett, Edam; third - Amelia McCaffrey, Edam; fourth - Kobes Bros., Edam. Average price during the sale was $930.87.

Prospect Heifer (four entries); Grand - McFarlane Simmentals (Corey McFarlane), Edam; Reserve - Coyote Mountain Tarentaise (Bill LaClare), Edam; third - Brandi Kobes, Edam; fourth - Dwayne Kobes, Edam. Average price for this class was $872.50.

Pen of Three Open Heifers; Grand - Duane McCaffrey, Edam; Reserve - Jullion Bros., Edam; third - Andrew Russett, Edam; fourth - Gerald Latendresse, Edam. Average price for these pens was $940.00.

Pen of Five Open Heifers; Grand - Andrew Russett, Edam; Reserve - LaClare Land and Cattle (Adrian and Brent LaClare), Edam; third - Duane McCaffrey, Edam; fourth - Joan Seabrook, Turtleford. Average price per pen was $995.38. The overall average for the open heifers came to $937.97.

The Pen of Three Bred Heifers (10 pens); Grand - Walterhouse Ranching (Stan and Dorothy Walterhouse), Tulliby Lake, Alta.; Reserve - Tyler Farms (Darren Tyler), Cut Knife; third - Bernard LaClare, Edam; fourth - Scott Macnab, Turtleford. Average price per pen was $1,691.00.

Pen of Five Bred Heifers (five pens); Grand - Walterhouse Ranching (Stan and Dorothy Walterhouse), Tulliby Lake, Alta.; Reserve - Scott Macnab, Turtleford; third - Konrad Seabrook, Turtleford; fourth - Silver Willow Ranch (John Roach), Edam. Average price per pen - $1,650. The overall average price for the bred heifers was $1,677.66.

The final class of the day was the Pen of Three Bulls for show only; Grand - Serhienko/Voegeli Charolais (Dennis Serhienko), Maymont; Reserve - 20\20 Angus (Owen and Bernie Legaarden), Paynton; third- McAvoy Charolais (Mike McAvoy), Arelee; fourth - Macnab Angus (Larry Macnab and Melissa Weitzel), Mervin.

This year the rink's Buy A Cow, Board A Cow program calves sold were cared for by Joe Cole, John Roach, Bernard LaClare, Don Cole (two), Jullion Bros, and Kobes Bros. There was one steer calf that sold for $890.00, and six heifers selling for an average of $717.50.

Before the bred heifers sold the draw for the bred heifer was made. This year the heifer was donated by Daniel de Montarnal of Edam and the winner was Jackie Johnson of Regina. Johnson chose to keep the heifer. The $100 was won by Bert Corbeil of Edam and $50 was won by Jackie Johnson of Regina. There was also a draw for a half beef won by Ruth Bec of Edam.

Winners of door prizes at the craft and trade show were: Teta Harty, Judy Thom, Marie Harty, Emily Jullion, Marie Grant, Apryl Grant, Tanya Harty, Barb Johnson, Paul Morin, Carol Alexander, Jessica Cadrain, Edna Carnahan, Marlis Maess, Jaycee Letwinetz, Hazel Mosiman, Carol Spence, Lucie Baillargeon, Sabrina Cadrain, Diane Blanchette, Jamie Dunlop, Woody Lacey and Murille Corbeil.

The weekend ended with the Muktoberfest Dance starting at 9 p.m. Congratulations to all the winners of the classes and draws and hats off to the fall fair and craft show committees on another successful weekend.
