School holds program for Scholastic Book Fair

Borden and Radisson News

Borden School held their Scholastic Book Fair Feb. 2 in the school gym. Librarian Linda Yuskiw welcomed everyone and thanked everyone for attending, stating that last fall they sold more than $2,000 worth of books thus getting many books for the library. She added the company sent a lot more books than usual for this sale.

For the program the kindergarten and Grade 1 class sang an action song, Down by the Bay. Grades 5 and 6 took turns reciting from book spine poetry. Grades 2-4 sang a song about overdue books, titled Give Me a Break, to the tune of Home on the Range.

Mrs. Yuskiw introduced her library crew who help out in the library and would help anyone that day. Parents and guests could then browse through the many books, posters, school supplies and more.

Borden Library and Riverbend Fellowship Church sponsored a family fun movie matinee Feb. 7 in the Borden Seniors’ Room. Librarian Rhonda Funk welcomed everyone and explained the draws, then introduced the movie. The board had bought many Minion-related prizes so every child present received a prize. The board sold popcorn and beverages, with admission free to watch the movie. Door prizes were won by Cailey Larner and Alexis Derbowka.

The library holds a dessert of the month draw. A year’s worth of tickets is $10 or $1 a month. Winning for February was Tasha Larner.

Borden parks and recreation board held a bowling tournament at Borden Action Bowl Feb. 6 with 10 teams of four bowlers each. Cash prizes were won by: first, Team Tammy – Dana Derbowka; second, Team Ballers – Jen Currie; third, Team P.S. – Christine Schmidt; and fourth, Gutter Gang – Shaun Barth.

The men’s high score of 210 was bowled by Chris Hamel, while the women’s high score of 193 was thrown by Anita Prescesky. The team high of 631 points belonged to Dana Derbowka’s Team Tammy. Turkey cash prizes went to Chris Hamel, Chris Anderson and Marsha Bzdel. The 50/50 draw was won by Chris Hamel.

It was a long day for many as one lane of the bowling alley broke down so all the games were played on one lane. The parks and recreation board sold pizza and vegetable plates with dip, offered free coffee or juice and ran a bar. Participants could play cards or table tennis in the main hall while waiting to play.

The Great Grannies team of Florence, Bev, Laura and Lorraine entered the tournament but we didn’t do so well against all these younger hotshot players, but it was a fun day and a fundraiser for the parks and recreation board.

Radisson Royal Purple met Feb. 1 at the home of Roberta Harris, with all members present. A donation of $50 was given to Telemiracle, one book of raffle tickets was sold and returned to the Saskatchewan Royal Purple, the lodge raffle was won by Audrey Baker and $50 was sent out last month to the Hafford Music Festival. The sunshine committee sent out 11 cards in the last month.

As 2016 is the 40th anniversary of Radisson Royal Purple, the lodge will plan something to celebrate the occasion. Four of the members – Kay Shipowich, Linda Yuskiw, Roberta Harris and Lorraine Olinyk – have belonged since 1976.

The ladies plan to sell charity appeal tickets for the Saskatchewan  Elks with the early bird draw in May and the main draw for a vehicle or cash in June.

The next meeting is March 7 at the home of Tina Hessell at 7:30 p.m. and anyone is welcome to drop in for a meeting. We would also welcome any new members to bolster up our lodge.

My grandson Duncan Sutherland is going to college in Cranbrook, B.C., studying kinesiology and playing volleyball with the College of the Rockies Avalanches. Every weekend they are playing, I have watched the games on the computer. They have seven teams in their league and travel to Abbotsford, Vancouver and the island to play and these teams come back to COTR to play.

There is only one weekend of play left, Feb. 12 and 13, then they are off to Abbotsford to Columbia Bible College to play in provincials. Duncan’s team currently sits in fifth place while the girls’ team is tied for fifth place. After the volleyball season ends, the students all have to buckle down and study for their finals.
