Students win prizes in lifestyles poster contest

It looks like spring has arrived, at least for a while. The students have been enjoying the weather and really like being able to play outside again. It has been a busy week at the school.

It has been a busy week at the school. The Royal Purple and Saskatchewan Elks sponsored a Healthy Choices Poster Contest. Lorraine Olinyk and Audrey Baker, representing the Royal Purple, came to the school March 14 announce the winners and present them with some money. All students received a treat for participating.

The winners were, in kindergarten, Paxton Hein first, Anneka Harder second and Jayden Caldwell third. In Grade 1, first was Estefani Rodriguez, second was Cash Bzdel and third place was a tie between Justin Dzialo and David Bouvier.

In Grade 2, Emily Stotz received first, Tristan Rempel was second and Rylan Voegeli was third. In the Grade 3 group, Allison Wawryk was first, Taylor Boklaschuk was second and Tyson Stinson was third.

From Grade 4, Tyler Klassen received first, Makenna Voegeli was second and Noah Montgrand and Cadence Lake were tied for third. Finally, in Grade 5, Hailey Harris was first, Alivia Hein was second and Emma Usselman was third.

We are very pleased Estefani Rodriguez's poster was sent on to the provincial competition. The contest is very worthwhile and we thank the Royal Purple for sponsoring it.

The Grades 2 to 5 music class took their choir to the Hafford Music Festival March 20. They performed two pieces, The Moon by Andy Beck and Stodola Pumpa, a Czech folk song arranged by Mark Weston. The students had practised very hard and performed well. Mrs. Stott was the pianist, Mrs. Brehon was the choir director and Ms. Gillatt assisted.

The SLC held a spirit day March 15. The theme for this day was Black and Green. The Grade 2 and 3 class along with the Grade 4 and 5 class are still really close in the race for a pizza. At noon, the SLC held a musical shamrock contest. It was similar to Musical Chairs but, when the music stopped, students had to run and stand on a shamrock.

The spring book fair was held this week. The book fair is an opportunity for students and staff to purchase new literature. The school receives a percentage of the profits. These profits are used to purchase new books for the library.

Students may be required to develop an e-portfolio in order to apply for certain jobs. A digital portfolio is an online profile that students create in order to showcase their achievements in school and their community.

We took four students from Maymont Central School - Jenna Fouhy, Ryan Klassen, Kale Skwark and Brooklyn Boklaschuk - to a workshop on digital portfolios at the Living Sky School Division office March 12. They were all given the opportunity to begin creating their own online portfolio using weebly.com.

They used the information to assist their classmates in their next career education class.

Pi Day is celebrated by many math teachers annually March 14. It is an opportunity to have fun with the students while discussing more abstract concepts in mathematics. ? (pi) is the ratio of the circumference of the circle to the diameter of the circle. ? = 3.141592653 It is an irrational number, which means it does not end or repeat a pattern.

We celebrated the day by eating cookies in number form, set up in the order of pi, and a large number of pies, brownies and cookies, all in circular form.

Students also competed in a pi scavenger hunt. First place was won by Katy and Kcarli, second place by the Grade 10 class and third place by Arielle, Tori, Frankie and Tia. Honourable mention goes to Thomas, Memo and Dylan. It was a great time and everybody enjoyed the day.

The staff had a professional development day at the school March 17. The teachers' morning began with a session on student-led conferences. This will be introduced in our school next fall. The rest of the day was spent on SMART Board training for some staff members and a session on autism presented by Autism Services of Saskatoon.

The SLC held a hotdog fundraiser to support the Starycki family, March 26. Nate Starycki, a kindergarten student in the school, has been in and out of hospital many times. He is currently a patient at the Toronto Sick Children's Hospital. All the proceeds from the hotdog sale will be presented to the Starycki family to help with their expenses. The school would like to thank the Battlefords and District Co-op for generously donating all the buns, wieners and condiments for our sale.

Janna Ferris, a Grade 7 student, played hockey with the Saskatoon Comet Peewee A Provincial Girls' Hockey team. The team was formed after tryouts were held in Waldheim and Saskatoon. Janna, a defenceman, was fortunate enough to make the team. Before the first round of provincials, the team had two exhibition games and many practices.

The first round of provincials was against the Dinsmore Coyotes. The team played well and won both games. During the second round, they played against some tough opponents, the Swift Current Ice Cats. The teams split the games but, because it was based on total points, they had to play an overtime period. Unfortunately during the double overtime, Janna's team lost. It was a hard loss for the team, but overall it was a fun, positive experience that Janna will never forget.

The Travel Club is getting very excited. They leave for Germany, Switzerland and Austria in a month.

Enjoy the first official days of spring.
