We Scare Hunger gathers up impressive pile of food

Please make sure you recognize the real reason you have a statutory holiday on Nov. 12 and take time, whether it is at the community Remembrance Day service, or taking a moment of silence on your own, to remember all those who sacrificed for our freedom.

The community Remembrance Day service takes place at Unity Composite High School senior gym starting at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

This couldn’t have come at a better time and thank you to the author of the most beautiful card that was intended as sympathies for some recent family losses but also included a note about my writing in this column each week. The writer reassured me I am on the right track as she knows of many who find our community’s news interesting and like how I am presenting it. Thank you JL for those kind words and encouragement.

What’s upcoming on the event list in Unity includes:

NWT hosts their appreciation lunch for customers and those who helped out with their dryer fire earlier in October Thursday.

Friday and Saturday Unity AA Midgets host home games

Nov. 15 the Unity Community Resource Centre hosts their ladies’ night out at the movies.

Nov. 22 the Unity Curling Club hosts a one-day sturling bonspiel.

Unity will have two Christmas sales this year, Nov. 24 and Dec 1 at the Anglican Hall from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Contact 306-228-8339.

Unity Midget AA Lazers host a home game Nov. 30.

At UCHS, student led conferences are Nov. 14 and 15. UCHS Warriors football will celebrate their season with a year-end banquet and awards ceremony Nov. 13. Senior Warrior curling beings Thursday, with practises every Thursday after school. UCHS is hosting senior district curling playdowns Feb. 12 and 13. UCHS fruit orders have been sent in and product is expected in early December. Mom’s Pantry orders are now being taken. “We Scare Hunger” collection on Halloween night resulted in a pile 15 feet long by 3.5 feet wide.

Unity Public School students were happy to welcome 280 visitors to their break stop on Halloween night. All contributed to their collections for the “We Scare Hunger” initiative. Sunshine and Rowan went to provincials in the Pass, Punt, and Kick competition. Sunshine came in first in girls’ 10 and under punting and Rowan came in second in boys’ 10 and under punting.

 St. Peter’s School Community Council is hosting a soup fundraiser from Nov. 1 to 16. Soups will be sold for $8 each.

SWHL lost another team from their league this year, with Eatonia and Kerrobert bowing out for this season, meaning the schedule has been altered yet again. Stay tuned to their website to keep on top of the Miners games as well as watch posters around town, the Miners FB page and the town website.

As of press time, the elusive ace of spades has not been won and the jackpot has grown beyond $13,000.

Coffee row folks have plenty of sports on their topic tables including the Riders hosting home playoffs, curling, local hockey and upcoming Rush season. Chase the ace has roused some regular conversation at these tables and the excitement grows as the jackpot expands. So you can see life is full of fun and activity in Unity with our friends at coffee row sharing this traditional part of our community culture. Until next time …
