EAST CENTRAL — Construction is underway for the intersection of Highway 335 and 35 including new rumble strips, shoulder widening and access to a roadside memorial.

According to the highways ministry, construction is due to a traffic engineering review performed after the Humboldt Broncos collision occurred on April 6, 2018, claiming the lives of 16 individuals and injuring 13 others.

“The review was completed in December of last year,” said David Horth, a ministry spokesperson. “There were more than a dozen recommendations put forward and all recommendations, except for one which was about relocating power lines, is planned for completion this year.”

The renovations will also include a new access road to the nearby Cargill elevator.

“There’s other work that’s going to be going on. That’s going to be construction of a new parking path and walking path, that should be completed later this month, that’s when it’s scheduled – then there’s the old gravel roadway will be removed as part of the project.”

Horth said the ministry is working with a property landowner at the southeast corner to remove the trees in the sight triangle.

“That’s expected to be resolved this year, also,” he said.

The ministry is asking drivers to use extra caution at the intersection and slow down and look for present workers when approaching.

“The most important thing, I think, is that our crews are safe and also the people travelling the road.”
