There is activity at the North Battleford Library this summer, as the TD Summer Reading Club gets into full swing.

This year the theme for the club is “SOLAR,” which stands for Science, Outdoor, Learning/Literacy, Art and Reading. The club is designed for kids between the ages of three to 12. There will be weekly draws for prizes as well as a grand prize draw at the end of the club on Sept. 1.

The library offers children’s programming from Monday to Saturday every week for the duration of the Summer Reading Club. Information about these programs can be found on the library’s website (www.northbattlefordlibrary.com), where subscriptions to a monthly email newsletter are also available.

Adults and teenagers can participate in the Summer Reading Contest by picking up ballots at the library for prizes. A grand prize draw will be held at the end of the club in September, but there is also a special incentive for people to take part this year. Richard Bee, the head librarian, has promised if the library receives 30 filled in and unique ballots by July 31 he will dye his hair bright green. If 50 filled in and unique ballots are returned by July 31, he will also dye his beard bright green, too.

The library is also running a user survey for people who regularly use the North Battleford Library. The intent of this survey is to gather thoughts and experiences from library users, so the library can make informed decisions and changes to how the community is served. Physical copies of the survey are available at the front desk of the library, or can be found online through the library’s Facebook page.

The library and the North Battleford Library Board also have a new mission statement, as a previous statement no longer adequately reflected the goals and ideals of what the library hopes to achieve. The new statement is “the North Battleford Library strives to serve our community by promoting life-long learning and literacy, offering people access to information, and providing people the facility and opportunity to embrace it.”

The library will be purchasing a new microfilm reader for the public to use. This new reader will allow people to save files electronically in addition to printing files, and with the software it comes with, users can now specifically save what they want instead of having to save or print an entire page of extra material. The library plans to have the microfilm reader up and ready to go by August.
