Two Fort Qu’Appelle RCMP officers were assaulted while responding to a domestic disturbance in the town of Abernathy Sunday at 3 a.m.

According to RCMP, the officers made contact with a 25-year-old man and 20-year-old woman. The woman had minor facial injuries. When the officers attempted to take the man into custody, both the man and woman became aggressive and assaulted both officers.

Police say a conducted energy weapon (CEW) was deployed at the woman, but was ineffective. She was not injured from the deployment. The man attempted to grab the CEW out of the officer’s hand. Additional officers were summoned and the couple was taken into custody.

One officer was examined at the Fort Qu’Appelle hospital and released.

The couple was remanded before a Justice of the Peace and appeared in Fort Qu'Appelle Provincial Court Monday. Both are in custody to appear Thursday bail hearings at Fort Qu’Appelle Provincial Court.

The woman is facing charges of domestic assault, two counts of assaulting a peace officer, forcible confinement, uttering threats and resisting arrest. The man is facing two charges of assaulting a peace officer, resisting arrest, attempting to disarm a police officer and forcible confinement.
