An Onion Lake man arrested by the North Battleford RCMP gang unit was sent to prison.
Lyndon Belly, 34, pleaded guilty in Lloydminster Provincial Court to charges of resisting arrest and possession of cocaine. When Belly was arrested he was initially charged with break and enter, possession of property obtained by crime, possession of cocaine and resisting arrest.
North Battleford Crown Prosecutor Charlotte Morden had asked the court for an 18 to 20 month prison sentence. Lloydminster Provincial Court Judge Kim Young, however, on Nov. 9, sentenced Belly to 15 months, less time served in remand since his arrest.
Belly was arrested on Aug. 15 after the RCMP gang unit tried to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation. The vehicle refused to stop and sped away. The police initiated a pursuit and put spike belts on Hwy 17 twice in an effort to stop the truck. The driver, however, left the highway to avoid the spike belts.
Police continued to follow the vehicle and when it stopped they saw two women and a man flee the truck and run into a nearby house. Police arrested Belly, along with Cheyenne Harper, 27, of Lloydminster and Wanita Harper, 30, of Onion Lake Cree Nation. Wanita Harper was charged with break and enter, resisting arrest, fleeing from police, driving while disqualified, refusing to provide blood alcohol samples, and dangerous operation of a vehicle. She was denied bail in August and remains in custody. She is scheduled to appear in Lloydminster Provincial Court Dec. 2 to speak to the matter.
Cheyenne Harper was charged with break and enter, and resisting arrest. She was given bail in August and pleaded guilty to charges of break and enter and mischief. On Nov. 4 in Lloydminster Provincial Court she was handed a three-month conditional sentence to be served in the community. She was also fined $100.
RCMP say the North Battleford RCMP gang unit was sent to Onion Lake Cree Nation Aug. 12 to 16 to help the Onion Lake RCMP tackle gang activity. The RCMP Crime Reduction Team members collaborate with communities and partner agencies to reduce gang violence and activity. There are two CRTs operated by the RCMP in Saskatchewan, one in Prince Albert and one in North Battleford.
