A preliminary hearing is set for an Onion Lake man, Christopher Cook, charged with shooting his neighbour earlier this year.

A preliminary hearing is set for an Onion Lake man charged with shooting his neighbour.

Christopher Cook, 26, had two more court appearances in Lloydminster Provincial Court Aug. 5 and July 20 and the matter is now going to a preliminary hearing to determine if there is enough evidence against Cook to proceed to a trial.

Cook is charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, unauthorized possession of a firearm, using a firearm in committing an offence, and discharging a firearm with intent.

The charges stem from an incident April 20 on Onion Lake Cree Nation where RCMP responded to a call about a 50-year-old man who was shot.

Cook was arrested the day of the shooting and released on bail in May.

According to Onion Lake RCMP, Cook and the man who was shot lived across the street from one another. North Battleford Provincial General Investigation Section of the RCMP, North Battleford Forensic Identification Service, and the North Battleford Police Dog Service assisted in the investigation.  RCMP officers from Onion Lake, Glaslyn, and Turtleford Detachments, as well as the Maidstone RCMP Roving Traffic Unit also responded.

The Crown prosecutor office from North Battleford handles all cases in Lloydminster Provincial Court and they are proceeding by indictable offence, which is the more serious offence and means more prison time if the person is found guilty.

The preliminary is set for two days starting Oct. 7 in Lloydminster Provincial Court.
