The RCMP Academy in Regina has ceased most of its training, some trainees are being sent home and all incoming troops have been postponed.
One troop that finished their training will graduate as scheduled on March 23 but the ceremony will be closed to all visitors including family. There won’t be a family orientation, chapel service or banquet.
RCMP say three more troops will complete their training and graduate over the next week under the same conditions. Their training schedules have been modified to permit this and this will enable the RCMP to deploy more than 120 new police officers to front line operations across Canada.
But all remaining troops are being sent home and a departure plan based on the availability of flights and other transport is being implemented.
At 4:30 p.m. on March 19 most training at the Depot ceased. Training will start back up once the academy has been cleared to do so by provincial and national health agencies.
Regular members on staff that are considered fit for duty may be re-deployed to front line duties in Saskatchewan or elsewhere in Canada where required.
The RCMP Academy closed the academy to visitors on March 13.
As of March 20 at 1:30 p.m. there were no presumptive or confirmed cases of COVID-19 at the RCMP Academy.
