Serious collision on highway 55 near Canwood

From the RCMP: On December 23, 2020, at approximately 4:42 p.m., Shellbrook/Ahtahkakoop RCMP received the report of a serious two vehicle collision on Highway 55, approximately 4-5 km north of Canwood, SK.

On December 23, 2020, at approximately 4:42 p.m., Shellbrook/Ahtahkakoop RCMP received the report of a serious two vehicle collision on Highway 55, approximately 4-5 km north of Canwood, SK.

Shellbrook/Ahtahkakoop RCMP along with the Prince Albert RCMP Traffic Services Unit, Spiritwood EMS and the Debden Fire Department also responded to the scene. Upon arrival, officers determined a car and an SUV were involved in a head-on collision, each carrying three occupants.

The driver of the car, a 39-year-old female, was declared deceased on scene by EMS. Her family has been advised of her death. A 17-year-old male passenger of the car was taken to hospital for what were reported to be minor injuries. A 9-year-old female passenger was taken to hospital for what were reported to be serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the SUV, 78-year-old male, was taken to hospital with what were reported to be minor injuries. The two female passengers of the SUV, ages 56 and 76, were taken to hospital with what were reported to be minor injuries.

Alcohol or drugs are not considered to be factors in the collision at this time.

RCMP Victim Services also attended the scene, along with an RCMP Reconstructionist and a member from the Saskatchewan Coroner’s Service.

Highway 55 was blocked and traffic was re-routed for several hours. The highway has resumed to normal traffic at approximately 11:30 p.m.
