Team Sask concludes Western Canada Summer Games in second place

Capture 213 medals

After ten days of intense competition between 1,700 athletes from across Western Canada in 16 different sports, the [www.2019wcsg.ca]2019 Western Canada Summer Games have come to a close. With a total of 213 medals (56 gold, 80 silver, 77 bronze) and 164 game points, Team Sask finished in second place in both medals and game point standings.

The team entered the Games with the goal of placing ahead of traditional rival Manitoba, which it did: Team Manitoba earned 171 medals in total 162 game points to place third. Game points are awarded to each team, male and female, based on their final placing in that sport; the accumulation of those placings rank the six western provinces and northern territories on how well each did in all sports throughout the Games.

Athletics, including Para Sport and Special Olympics, led the count for Team Sask, with a total of 75 medals (22 gold, 28 silver, 25 bronze) and 2,161 points. Saskatchewan swept the podium in men's Decathlon (JAKE NEUFELD of Saskatoon, JORDAN DASIUK of Dalmeny and ASAD HUSSAIN of Regina) and the men's 800m (RON MACLEAN and MATTHEW EXNER, both of Regina, and BRAYDEN MYTOPHER of Strasbourg). Though Team Alberta outpaced the other contingents in overall medals at the end of the Games, the Athletics team bested its western neighbour by several hundred points.

Nearly every sport saw Saskatchewan athletes claim medals, with both men's and women's Basketball earning silver; both men's and women's golf earning Bronze in the team event; silvers for women's and U16 men's Softball, and for U19 men's Softball, bronze; a pair of bronzes for the men's and women's Indoor Volleyball teams; silver for the women's Golf team and bronze for the men's; silver for the Tennis Team Mix event; and silver medals for the Men's and Women's Team Competitions in Wrestling. Many individual and relay or team medals were claimed in Canoe Kayak (including ten golds earned by Saskatoon's JAYDEN HINGLEY), Cycling, Swimming and Special Olympics Swimming, Diving (including a Saskatchewan sweep in the women's 3m Spring by MARGO ERLAM and QUINN GARIEPY, both of Saskatoon, and KELSEY CLAIRMONT, of Regina), Rowing, Swimming, Tennis, Triathlon, and Wrestling.
