Three people who were pursued by Saskatchewan and Alberta RCMP after allegedly shooting a man on Onion Lake Cree Nation appeared in Lloydminster Provincial Court Aug. 4.

They were arrested last week after the shooting on Onion Lake Cree Nation, followed by two attempted and one successful carjacking in Lloydminster where shots were fired in the alleged crimes.

Lucas Aaron Oakes, 24, Jesse Leigh Heathen 33, and Montana Horse, 21, were all remanded in custody.

On July 29 at about 5 p.m. Onion Lake RCMP responded to a report of a man being injured by a firearm. The victim was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

According to police the suspects fled the area in a vehicle, which was located near Lloydminster but the pursuit was called off for public safety.

About an hour later the Lloydminster RCMP got a report that the suspect vehicle collided with another vehicle on 46 Avenue in Lloydminster. Police say two of the suspects with a firearm tried stealing a truck from someone at gunpoint but were unsuccessful and fled on foot.

Minutes later, the armed suspects attempted another carjacking and fired two shots at someone inside a car. The driver was able to drive away to safety.

The two suspects then assaulted a third victim and stole a truck. Police found the vehicle east of Lloydminster and started a pursuit. But police called off the chase after the stolen vehicle veered into oncoming traffic in the westbound lanes on Highway 16.

At about 6:50 p.m. Maidstone RCMP got a report of a stolen truck near the junction of Highway 16 and Highway 303. That truck was later found in Lloydminster and Montana Horse of Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation was arrested in the area.

At about 7:30 p.m. Maidstone RCMP got a report that a truck with two men was stuck near Hillmond. The men fled the area before police arrived but were arrested while walking on a road nearby.

Both Oakes, from Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation, and Heathen from Lloydminster, were charged with theft of a truck robbery using a firearm, discharge of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, assault, uttering threats and flight from police. Heathen was charged with several more offences and Oakes was charged with 15 additional offences, including seven charges in connection to the Onion Lake shooting.

Horse was charged with possession of property obtained by crime, possession of a controlled substance, and two counts of failing to comply with conditions. She was wanted by the police at the time of her arrest.

Oakes and Heathen both have show cause hearings scheduled in Lloydminster Provincial Court on Aug. 17. Horse has a show cause hearing scheduled in Lloydminster Provincial court on Aug. 6.
