Turtleford RCMP arrest five fleeing suspects

Four people have been charged with offences related to firearms and attempting to escape police after an incident in Thunderchild First Nation area.

Turtleford RCMP report that at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Dec. 19, members patrolling on the Thunderchild First Nation attempted to pull over a vehicle that had been identified as being unregistered. The suspect vehicle failed to stop for police and fled westbound towards Turtleford.

Members deployed a spike belt, but the attempt proved unsuccessful.

The vehicle was next observed travelling on the wrong side of the road at a speed estimated at 120 kms/hr. After a short pursuit, the suspect vehicle became stuck in a ditch near Turtle Lake. The five adult occupants were arrested without incident at the scene and a sawed-off firearm with ammunition was located in the vehicle.

Kelly Wapass (1989/04/27) has been charged with: CC 92(3)(b) Possession of a firearm/prohibited weapon when knowing possession unauthorized - second offence; CC 94(2) Possession of firearm/weapon/device/ammunition in motor vehicle; CC 95(2) Possession of restricted firearm/prohibited weapon with ammo without licence/registration; CC 117.01(3) Weapons possession contrary to order and fail to surrender authorization; CC 180(1) Common Nuisance.

James Lewis (1981/12/13) has been charged with: CC 88(2) Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose; CC 94(2) Possession of firearm/weapon/device/ammunition in motor vehicle; CC 95(2) Possession of restricted firearm/prohibited weapon with ammo without licence/registration; CC 117.01(3) Weapons possession contrary to order and fail to surrender authorization; CC 180(1) Common Nuisance; CC 733.1(1) Fail to comply probation order.

Lyndon Belly (1985/11/07) has been charged with: CC 88(2) Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose; CC 92(3)(b) Possession of a firearm/prohibited weapon when knowing possession unauthorized - second offence; CC 94(2) Possession of firearm/weapon/device/ammunition in motor vehicle; CC 95(2) Possession of restricted firearm/prohibited weapon with ammo without licence/registration;  CC 117.01(3) Weapons possession contrary to order and fail to surrender authorization; CC 180(1) Common Nuisance; CC 249.1(1) Operation of Motor Vehicle while being pursued by police; CC 249(1)(a) Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle; CC 259(4) Driving while disqualified/prohibited.

Jonah Mitsuing (2000/03/24) has been charged with; CC 88(2) Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose; CC 92(3)(b) Possession of a firearm/prohibited weapon when knowing possession unauthorized - second offence; CC 94(2) Possession of firearm/weapon/device/ammunition in motor vehicle; CC 95(2) Possession of restricted firearm/prohibited weapon with ammo without licence/registration; CC 129(a) Resists/obstruct peace officer; CC 145(3) Failure to comply with condition of undertaking or recognizance / direction in remand order; CC 180(1) Common Nuisance; CC 403 Identity Fraud.

The fifth suspect was released but remains under investigation.

All four accused were scheduled to appear in Lloydminster Provincial Court Dec. 20.
