Battleford town council is going ahead with trying to address dust issues along the roads in Battleford West.

They have approved the purchase and application of a canola-based dust suppressant. According to the council motion, that will be applied on 5 Ave. W. , Hwy. 40 – Telegraph Rd., Service Rd. Hwy. 4 intersection of 4 Ave. W. and 13 St., and the remainder will be used on a couple of higher traffic areas as well.

The hope is this application will be more effective at controlling the dust on the roads in Battleford West than what the town had been trying before. The town had heard some complaints from residents in Battleford West about the amount of dust kicked up on the roads by vehicles rolling by.

This marks a switch from a calcium chloride application the town had been using on those streets. However, it does come with an increased cost. The cost is $7,000 for calcium chloride but it is $15,500 plus taxes for the canola-based product.

Mayor Ames Leslie said that, according to information from administration, the canola should be a one-time application for the year and should provide greater efficacy and long term use. The calcium chloride will, however, still be available for a few streets.

Councillor Doug Laing said this is a trial run with the canola-based product, to see if it will provide “better luck and some longevity” as opposed to the calcium chloride product.
