For three days this week, the Western Development Museum is hosting a major conference aimed at Indigenous success.

It was the Atoskewin Success Gathering 2020, put on by the Atoskewin Success Centre Tuesday through Thursday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day. The event was directed toward Indigenous individuals looking to succeed and gain employment opportunities.

The event included guest speakers and numerous training and education booths and try-a-trade opportunities, as well as daily land-based learning. Among those with a booth was Kendra Weenie, author of the book Surviving Domestic Violence. There was also a hand game tournament Wednesday.

Keynote speakers for the first day included Anthony and James, winners of Amazing Race Canada Season 7; Brigette Lacquette from the Canadian Women’s Olympic hockey team; and entertainer Conway Kootenay.

Organizers say over 200 people attended the first day’s events, which were free of charge. More keynote speakers and guests were scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday; also scheduled for Thursday were music, traditional dancing as well as a fashion show.
