A new cannabis retail outlet could be coming to downtown North Battleford.

City council has given its approval to a discretionary land use application for the establishment of a Cannabis Retail Outlet at the Rock Shop, 1221 - 101st St. in the downtown.

A public notice had gone out and administration stated they have not received any calls objecting to the application, which was approved unanimously at Monday’s meeting.

The Rock Shop would still need to apply for approval of a cannabis retail license from the province of Saskatchewan. According to a city memo, the province recently expanded the number of cannabis retail licenses available, up from the two that were initially approved for North Battleford.

The memo also stated the Rock Shop would also need to make some required changes to their building so that the cannabis is safely stored in line with provincial regulations.

The 101st Street location fits within the cannabis regulations in the city’s Zoning Bylaw, which sets out the zones where cannabis retail can be located. The bylaw requires cannabis outlets to have a 225 metre buffer from any parks and schools in North Battleford, and the Rock Shop is located outside of that boundary.
