Located on Treaty 6 Territory, Battleford Family Health Centre Community Garden Project has been serving the Battlefords and area residents for more than a decade. It started as a diabetes prevention initiative and has grown to an outdoor classroom for all ages. Over the years many land-based learning initiatives have been incorporated. The gardens are host to Indigenous teachings that involve learning from topics such as medicine wheel flower beds, a Healing Garden of cedar, sweet grass, sage and traditional tobacco, the Tipi Garden, the Red Dress Garden to honour Missing Murdered and Indigenous Women, the Every Child Matters Orange Shirt Garden, and the Heart Garden to honour residential school survivors and their families. Project coordinator, Rose Favel, is thankful for the recognition and support the project has received internationally, nationally, provincially and regionally, from the City of North Battleford and the Town of Battleford, community minded businesses, partnerships and numerous individuals.
