Fire Chief Lindsay Holm had an update for city council members this past week on what is happening in the aftermath of a couple of house fires in North Battleford earlier this year.

One was a structure fire on the 1700 block of Centennial Cres. in early January while the other was on the 9000 block of Abbott Ave. a few days later.

The reason those have not been demolished yet, said Holm, was because both properties contained asbestos and an asbestos-abatement procedure had to be followed.

It was his understanding it was completed for the Abbott Ave. property but not yet for the Centennial one. It was also his understanding from the insurance company that they were going through the permitting process for demolishing both buildings.

A reason Holm cited for the delay was because the asbestos-abatement could not get started in January, as water used to put out the fires had frozen solid at those sites due to the cold weather conditions. Holm reported it was his hope those two properties should come down within a month or two.
