Fines for driving 100 kms/hr over the speed limit and more

Motorcycle officers do four-day long enforcement in the west central part of Saskatchewan
RCMP stop.
RCMP stop. Submitted

From the RCMP:

Saskatchewan RCMP Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan (CTSS) Motorcycle Officers were out doing enforcement in the west-central part of the province from Thursday, July 8 to Sunday, July 11.

Six CTSS officers on motorcycles travelled in and around Battleford, North Battleford, Lloydminster, Meadow Lake and the surrounding areas. They were keeping an eye out for unsafe driving behaviours including cell phone use while driving, not using seatbelts, not obeying stop signs and other traffic signage, impaired driving, speeding (particularly in construction zones and while driving past emergency vehicles with equipment enabled), and more.

Over those four days, the officers gave out 370 tickets: 50 of which were for drivers going faster than 60km/hr when passing emergency vehicles, 98 were seatbelt tickets, 35 were for cell phone usage while driving and one for an impaired driving offence. Officers also used these four days as an opportunity to educate the motoring public – issuing a total of 279 warnings.

Here are a few things our officers encountered during this enforcement initiative:

That’s one hefty fine! – After being pulled over for going 100 kms/hr over the speed limit (160 kms/hr in a 60 kms/hr zone) and swerving through traffic while leaving North Battleford, one driver was found to also have open liquor in their vehicle. They were given a 120-day license suspension after providing a breath sample and being over the legal limit (on top of the 60-day suspension they’d been issued the day before for the same offence), their vehicle was towed and they received fines totalling $1,948 (for open liquor, failing to stop at a red light and speeding).

From zero to two tickets in six minutes – Officers pulled over one driver near Lashburn and issued them a ticket for going 133 kms/hr in a 110 kms/hr zone. After the driver was free to go, they were pulled over again about a mile away for going 93 kms/hr when passing an officer conducting a traffic stop at the side of the road (meaning it was a 60kms/hr zone). Within six minutes, this driver received two tickets totaling $710.

Tobacco seizure and a ticket – One driver in North Battleford, when pulled over, was found to have a large amount of contraband tobacco in their vehicle. The driver was issued a $1,400 ticket as a result and the product was seized.
