Last week, CBI Health Centre, with help from Lawrence School, Bready School’s Better Together group and the Battlefords Gymnastics Club, undertook an annual food drive for the Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre.

Executive Director Erin Katerynych says a total of “2,412 pounds of food was collected from the community and almost $400 raised, so the grand total is 2,560 pounds or $6,656 worth.”

She said, “Last year the total was 2239 lbs of food. I consider this food drive a success and the food will go a long way in helping the community.”

May is one of the Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre’s busiest months in the year.

“Last year in May we handed out 767 hampers, helping 2,447 people. Almost half of those were children and it looks to be about the same again this May. Spring and summer are also when donations to the food bank drop. The Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre has had to cut back on the perishable food items in the hampers because we don’t have enough to meet the demand in the community.”

Katerynych adds, “Hunger does not take a summer holiday. Our goal is to bring in enough food to help us throughout the spring and summer season.”
