A number of aspiring Joey Chestnuts were on hand in North Battleford Wednesday at the Gold Eagle Casino Hot Dog Eating Championship.

The event coincided with National Hot Dog Day across the country. On the line was the “Ketchup Belt” along with a prize pool of $1,000 for the top three finishers. Proceeds from the event went to The Lighthouse Serving the Battlefords.

All contestants were given two plates of five hot dogs each. They were given five minutes to consume as many hot dogs as they could. Paramedics were on site just in case there were any choking incidents.

With fans chanting and encouraging the contestants, the contest – and hot dogs – went quickly.

In the end the winner was Ken Kwan from Saskatoon who consumed five hotdogs in five minutes. There was a four-way tie for second and third, a tie that was then broken by a sudden-death single-hot-dog eating round.

In that round, Patrick Atcheynum and Travis Thunderchild consumed their hot dogs in the fastest time to claim second and third places.

While the contestants gave it their best Wednesday, their efforts fell far short of Chestnut’s consumption of 71 hot dogs to win the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest on July 4.
