One of the items to come up at City Hall recently has to do with taxes on care homes.

North Battleford city council members, on July 15, approved unanimously a property tax abatement for 2019 care homes.

This is a response to the SAMA property tax assessment changes that impacted care homes. According to Director of Finance Steve Brown, a number of care homes went from being assessed as residential to commercial, and saw a substantial increase to their assessment as a result.

To alleviate that tax hit, the city will abate 90 per cent of the municipal tax increase for this year caused by the change, less the four per cent increase included in the 2019 budget to all city properties. The plan is for the abatement to gradually be reduced in future years.
