Number of COVID-19 cases in Sask. jumps to 16

The province has announced eight presumptive new cases of COVID-19 in the province bringing the total up to 16.

According to the province's news release, 15 of the 16 cases are self-isolating at home while one is in hospital for non-related medical reasons.

Dr. Saqib Shahab, the province's chief medical officer, said it was a critical time for all individuals and organizations to practise social distancing and stay home.

"We have an instance where the contact investigation has not yet determined a link to travel, which could signal local transmission. We will also see more cases linked to travel within Canada. Limit all non-essential travel at this time as part of the provincial and national effort to prevent transmission." 

Of the eight new cases, one was an individual in their 30s tested in Regina; one was an individual in their 40s tested following close contat with a previously announced presumptive positive case in Saskatchewan; an individual in their 20s tested in Saskatoon following a trip to Tennessee; an indivdual in their 20s tested in Saskatoon following travel to Oregon, Nevada and Edmonton; an individual tested in Moose Jaw following travel to Vancouver; an individual tested in Regina following travel to Cancun; an individual tested in Regina following travel to Cabo San Lucas; and an individual in their 40s tested in Saskatoon following travel to Vancouver.

All persons returning from international destinations including the United States are required to self-isolate for 14 days on return; as well public health officials are requesting all individuals on the following Sunwing flights on March 14 to self-isolate and actively monitor for symptoms: Sunwing WG540 Cancun to Regina; Sunwing WG496 Cabo San Lucas to Regina.
