The process to demolish the old Saskatchewan Hospital has begun.

The city of North Battleford has announced that the road from Battleford Road to Hereford Street is being closed to accommodate the demolition of old Sask. Hospital.

There will be no through traffic on the road, according to the city, and this closure will run from Jan. 11 to July 31, 2021.

The News-Optimist has reached out to the province for further details about the demolition plans. They have confirmed that Silverado Demolition Operations Ltd. out of Saskatoon has been contracted to do the demolition work and are on site starting today, Jan. 11, to start abatement work -- removing hazardous materials and preparing the site for safe demolition.

The province further states that demolition work will begin shortly and continue through to the spring. Once the buildings are demolished and the land restored to more natural condition, that land will be sold.

Regarding the heritage items at the location, the chapel will be preserved and so will the hand-built stone walls throughout the complex.

The province will continue to be responsible for maintenance of three cemeteries on the property, all of which will be cared for and accessible to the public. Other heritage items, such as doors, have been removed and are in storage for Battlefords North West Historical Society.

The province also states that the Veterans Memorial Park will be transferred to the City of North Battleford.
