SGI reported that there was still plenty of drinking and driving cases found during the December Traffic Safety Spotlight on impaired driving.

Police have reported there 369 impaired driving offences, including 288 Criminal Code charges, for the month.

They are also reporting that impaired driving didn’t stop during the pandemic, and police continued their strong focus all year with strong enforcement, resulting in licence suspensions, vehicle impoundments, and potential fines and/or jail time imposed by the courts.

The December Traffic Safety Spotlight is also reporting lower-than-average numbers for other offences:

414 distracted driving tickets (360 for cellphone use);

3,453 tickets for aggressive driving and speeding;

207 tickets for seatbelts and child restraint being used incorrectly or not at all.

The January Traffic Safety Spotlight focuses on intersection safety and rail safety. SGI and law enforcement intend to focus on impaired driving again in February, May, September, and December.
