The Champion of Mental Health in the volunteer category is Joyce Salie (right) receiving her award from committee member Carol Funk (left). This award recognizes volunteers who make a positive impact on individuals with mental illness. A gala Saturday will honour Salie and her fellow award winners.

Mental Health Week will be wrapping up with the fourth annual Champions of Mental Health Gala Saturday, sponsored by the North Battleford Branch of the Registered Psychiatric Nurses Association.

The awards banquet will be the fourth held locally in recognition of individuals, organizations and businesses in the community who have a positive impact on the lives of persons living with mental illness.

It will be held at the Dekker Centre in North Battleford and will feature entertainment by the Cochin Community Players who will present the one act comedy Bloom by Saskatchewan playwright Leeann Minogue. Tickets are available by calling 306-937-7657 or 306-445-3067.

The Champions of Mental Health Award recipients are chosen from among nominations submitted by the community, naming people deserving of recognition for their contributions to the cause and needs of the mentally ill in the Battlefords area.

Advocacy for quality integrated mental health services and policy falls within one of the mandates of the Registered Psychiatric Nurses Association, so the North Battleford branch initiated the awards to acknowledge those in the community who are making a difference in the lives of people living with mental illness, and to bring an awareness to the public, locally and further afield, of the continuing need to improve mental health services.
