EAST CENTRAL — The deadline is approaching to remove fishing shacks from the frozen lakes.

For those of us north of Highway 16, the deadline date is Tuesday, March 31. For those south of that highway, the date is Sunday, March 15.

“Every year, ice fishing shelters are abandoned on the ice, which can pose a danger to boaters, water-skiers and others enjoying our lakes,” said the province in a media release. “Pieces of abandoned shelters can also wash up on shore, causing environmental hazards.”

The province warns that those who don’t remove their shacks may be prosecuted, with the shack being moved off the ice and confiscated.

Litter must also be removed from the shack site.
