Horticulture club hosts 51st annual show

The Walter Willoughby Horticultural Society (WWHS) has served as a club for gardeners and hobby enthusiasts for 53 years. Members consist of garden and floral enthusiasts from the novice to highly experienced.

Members consist of garden and floral enthusiasts from the novice to highly experienced. The WWHS show tradition dates back 51 years and offers adults and youth members an opportunity to exhibit fruits, vegetables, flowers, baking and photos for judging. It is an exciting way to celebrate the end of the growing season and gardening successes.

WWHS held its 51st annual show Aug. 16 at the Leask Lions Hall. The aroma of floral scents from the fresh cut displays and floral arrangements greeted visitors upon arrival. There were 340 exhibits from 26 exhibitors ranging from photography and crafts to baking and vegetable/fruit entries.

Results of the show were as follows: best photograph in show went to Beryl Peake with 32 points, best houseplant in show went to Mary Giesbrecht with 20 points, best dahlia in show went to Margie Monus with 33 points, best gladiola in show went to Barb Valuck with 15 points, crafts and concoctions aggregate went to Fern Millar with 23 points, baking aggregate went to Lil Sorenson with 40 points, teen aggregate went to Melodie Beam with 58 points, beginner aggregate went to Blythe Cobb with 26 points, fruit aggregate went to Louise Person with 15 points, vegetable aggregate went to Joanne Beam with 59 points, potted plant aggregate went to Mary Giesbrecht with 20 points, cut flower aggregate went to Joanne Beam with 36 points, flower arrangement aggregate went to Joanne Beam with 25 points, reserve aggregate went to Beryl Peake with 81 points and grand aggregate went to Joanne Beam with 165 points. First-time new exhibitor recognition was given to Blythe Cobb with 20 points and second to Celeste Adair with second points.

Judges for the categories included Sandra Benson of Canwood for the photography category, Pat Wasylkowski of Marcelin for the crafts, Beryl Peake of Leask for the baking and Amanda Ryce of Saskatoon for the fruit, vegetable and flower categories.

WWHS has 25 members residing in various areas within the Leask/Shellbrook area. The board, consisting of Judy Harley as president, Beryl Peake as vice-president, Jessie Dion as secretary and Gloria Cameron as treasurer, is actively involved in the operations and planning of events including fundraising efforts.
