When the Royal Canadian Mounted Police asked children to help name the first 13 puppies to be born at the Police Dog Services Training Centre in 2020, Lucas Beyea of Loon Lake submitted his entry of "Narco."

When the names of the puppies were announced this week "Narco" made the list.

"Thank you to all the children who entered," said S/Sgt. Gary Creed, senior Trainer and acting officer in charge of the Police Dog Service Training Centre. "And thank you to all the teachers who make this part of their class work. These 13 names will serve our dogs with pride."

All names had to start with the letter N. For entries of the same name, a draw determined the winner.

The other winning entries are:

Nanuq - Hunter Lowe (Rankin Inlet, Nunavut);

Narley - Avery Moreau (Surrey, B.C.);

Neeka - Logan Grant (Cornwall, Ont.);

Nelly- Thomas Lafrenière (Gatineau, Quebec);

Nero- Malcolm Costain (Elmsdale, P.E.I.);

Newman- Landon MacDougall (Truro, N.S.);

Nina- Aleesha Hanna (Napan, N.B.);

Nixon- Gannon Myers (Port au Choix, N.L.);

Niya- Sabella Nickerson (Bowden, Alta.);

Noah- Jeremiah Olson (Fort McPherson, N.W.T.);

The 13 winners will each receive a laminated photo of the pup they named, a plush dog named Justice and an RCMP water bottle.

The RCMP Police Dog Service Training Centre in Innisfail, Alta. is the training centre for all RCMP police dog teams in Canada.

All the German shepherds working today as RCMP service dogs were born at the PDSTC as part of the RCMP Police Dog Breeding Program.
