Maymont university student awarded Canadian Western Agribition scholarship

Kathryn Serhienko of Maymont, known as Katie, has been awarded a post-secondary scholarship from the Canadian Western Agribition.

Serhienko is from a purebred Charolais operation and has participated at CWA for the last 15 years. She has her agribusiness diploma from Lakeland College and is currently studying at the University of Saskatchewan to obtain her agribusiness degree. After school she hopes to work in the agriculture lending field.

Every year, CWA awards post-secondary scholarships to future leaders connected to the show. The CWA Scholarship was formed 25 years ago, and since then there has been $216,000 awarded from three scholarships.

Canadian Western Agribition Scholarship awards $2,500 to students with a history of involvement in CWA as exhibitors, volunteers, or competitors pursuing post-secondary education.

Other recipients are:

Christin Dixon of Arcola, who grew up on a purebred Polled Hereford farm and has participated at CWA for eight years. She was active in school sports and was the class Valedictorian. She is now attending the University of Regina, and hopes to become a dentist and run a small herd of Polled Hereford cattle.

Travis Hunter of Didsbury, Alta., who grew up on a Red Angus farm and has participated at CWA for three years. He is currently attending Old’s College for Agricultural Management Marketing. After school he plans to return to the farm and find work in the agriculture industry.

Barry Andrew Family Scholarship awards $1,500 to students with a history of involvement in CWA as well as pursuing post-secondary education in the field of agriculture. 

Jill Sparrow of Vanscoy whose family run a mixed cattle and grain operation. She’s participated in Youth Team Grooming at CWA for three years. She attends the University of Saskatchewan where she is working towards her bachelor of science in agriculture majoring in agronomy and plans to obtain her master’s degree.

William M. Farley Memorial Scholarship awards $1,500 to students with a history of involvement in CWA with special recognition for those contributing to the show through volunteerism.

Emma Nicholas of Milestone and her family raise purebred Hereford cattle and display bulls at CWA. She is an active volunteer and participates in sports, 4-H, coaching skating and more. She is currently attending school in Lethbridge to obtain a degree in nursing. After school she plans to be involved in rural health care and continue to help on her family farm.
