Angel Bird of Mosquito First Nation has brought home one gold, one bronze and a trophy as 2015 Champion of the World from the World Champion of Performing Arts in Hollywood, Calif.

A vocalist, Angel — her birth name is Kae-Lynne Bird — was discovered on YouTube after her cousin posted a video of her singing. She had auditioned many years ago and was picked for WCOPA.

Angel was once again pursued by WCOPA and finally accepted the challenge to go compete against 900 contestants from 50 countries.

In Hollywood, Angel says she was anxious about fulfilling her dream. With full support of her six-year-old daughter Kaysha London Bird, her parents Kelly and Glenda Bird, siblings Kerishia, manager, K.J. Kaleb and her agent boyfriend, Eugene Fluery, she embarked on a two-week adventure.

The experience included sessions with vocal coaches and dress rehearsals.

Angel's winning songs were I'd Rather Go Blind by Etta James for gold and James Brown’s This Is A Man's World for bronze.

While in Hollywood Angel interviewed four agents after her performances, who wanted to produce songs and an album with her. It was a difficult decision to choose one of the four. She ended up choosing an agent/producer who also produced Madonna and Janet Jackson.

Angel has had many accomplishments in her 26 years, one being rodeo queen of Kinsmen Rodeo in North Battleford and also being a champion barrel racer with many associations.

Angel says her dream and passion was always singing, however. She says she has been encouraged over the years by her mother Glenda and big sister Kerishia, who is a sergeant with Saskatoon Police Service.

She has been invited to sing at a Vancouver Island event this August, and she is currently preparing for that performance. Angel has also been asked to sing the national anthem for the Calgary Stampede in 2016.

Angel will be getting ready to go back to California in a few months to sign on with a producer in the R & B and soul industry. She says she is extremely excited to begin her adventure in the music industry. She says she knows it's a big step, but it's worth every note she sings.

Angel acknowledges the support of Mosquito First Nation chief Danny Starchief and council, as well as that of her family and friends. Angel says Michelle Glay has also always been a staunch supporter.

Angel is a youth worker and hair stylist in Saskatoon.
