Deputy Premier and Minister of Education Gordon Wyant has announced that 12 high school students have been named to the 2019-20 provincial Youth Council.

One of them has been selected representing Living Sky School Division from the northwest of the province, Julie Patton from Luseland.

According to a news release from the province, students on the 2019-20 provincial Youth Council will “have the opportunity to address meaningful issues directly with the Minister of Education and other government members, while also providing guidance on how to better engage students.”

There were 51 students nominated and 12 were selected after an adjudication and interview process.

“Students have a critical voice in education and an important role to play in improving the future of our province, and I am looking forward to hearing their valuable feedback,” Wyant said in a statement. “Thank you to the school divisions and education organizations who took the time to submit nominations and support our students in making their voice heard.”

The council’s first meeting will take place Oct. 19.
