The Prince George Fire Centre is advising the public that the visible smoke or haze seen in the areas of Prince George, Vanderhoof and Fort St. James is nothing to worry about locally.

There are currently no active fires in the Prince George Fire Centre area, a statement released by the centre said.

"(The) smoke can likely be attributed to the southern air mass flowing through the province, that is bringing smoke north from the wildfires that are currently burning in the U.S.," the statement said. "The smoke can also be attributed to the wildfires that are currently burning in Siberia. The smoke is carried in on the jet stream and is anticipated to linger."

Currently several large wildfires are burning in Washington state, Oregon and northern California – including the Caldwell fire in northern California that has consumed 79,118 acres (32,018 hectares) to date.
