Between then and when

Linda’s Lines
Linda Wegner

Approximately six months ago, we received the exciting news: Granddaughter Sarah is getting married! Actually, though, excitement is too mild a descriptive but you get what I mean – we were over the moon. Both beautiful young people with hearts to serve the Lord, I wasted no time in booking a flight for the event. That was then.

It seemed the time passed so slowly, but suddenly we were just one week away from the day I was to leave. Next question: where did that terrible pain come from? To make a four-day story short, I ended up in hospital with the distinct possibility of having to cancel my flight. I must give thanks to a wonderful doctor, prayers of people far and wide and the intervention of the Lord that I was able to get out of the hospital several days before leaving. It’s been a slow-motion version of all I planned to do but I got there.

The whole process got me thinking about life in general and eternity in particular. No matter what our station in life or the length of our time here on earth, there are so many “then” challenges, obstacles as well as blessings that fill our lives between our “then” days and the future blessings contained in the “when” days and, indeed, eternity, to come. The vital element in realizing God’s best each hour and day is to commit those moments, days and years to His hands.

“By and by, when the morning comes,

when the saints of God are gathered home,

we’ll tell the story how we've overcome,

for we’ll understand it better by and by.” (Alfred Tindley)

“If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.”  Romans 14:8
