It’s far from necessary to say that our world is a totally different place than it was mere weeks ago and I won’t bore you by reiterating the changes we all have and continue to face in the days to come. Most frustrating for me is the fact that everything has changed and yet nothing seems to change, except, now I face the effects of self-isolation, multiplied hand washes throughout the day and for us who are seniors, exhortations to allow others to do our shopping for us. These simple things have removed much of our sense of personal independence.
Another thing that has changed is I face many new opportunities to make choices. Where once I wouldn’t have given them a second thought, decisions as to what I will do, if and where I will go somewhere for a drive, or if I’ll simply crawl into bed for an extended afternoon nap, now require careful consideration. I thank God daily that we and our neighbours have gardens that respond to my love of weeding (honestly, I do love weeding).
Of far greater importance, however, are the choices I make daily as to how I will glorify the Lord, build up my own strength and be a blessing to those with whom I can still greet across the street each evening. Here’s how Roy T. Bennett put it:
“Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make makes you. Choose wisely.”
Some choices we can make using human reasoning, others require divine guidance. Let’s choose to let God teach us how to choose well.
“Where is the man who fears the Lord? God will teach him how to choose the best.” Psalm 25:12
