We know what it is. Especially women. Cellulite. For anyone who has had it or does have cellulite, they know what a battle it can be to get rid of.

So, what is cellulite exactly? Simply put, it is fat. Typically occurring on the thighs, buttocks and abdomen, cellulite is patchy, dimpling pockets of fat. Contrary to what most people think, cellulite is not related to being overweight or obese. Cellulite can occur in underweight people as well.

What causes it? There are many factors that can play a role in cellulite production. Hormones like estrogen, insulin and thyroid hormones are believed to play a role in the production of cellulite. Genetics also have a large impact. If your mom had cellulite, unfortunately, you are more likely to have it as well. Diet plays a large part as well. Eating too much fat and simple carbohydrates (white breads, pastries, sugar, etc.) and not enough fibre, complex carbohydrates (whole grains, fruits, vegetables) and protein. Another contributing factor tends to be whether you sit or stand in the same position for long periods of time as poor circulation contributes to cellulite production.

So, how can you prevent cellulite or get rid of it? Well, you could spend a lot of money on expensive creams but the likelihood that they will work in the long term is pretty slim. The only way to get rid of cellulite permanently is the same way you get rid of any excess fat. Eat healthy! Reduce the amount of fat in your diet and replace it with healthy fruits and vegetables. Drink plenty of water. Eight to 10 glasses a day. Exercise, exercise, exercise! Cardiovascular activity is the fastest way to burn excess fat. Walking or jogging for 30 minutes at least four times a week will definitely help. Strength training can help to tone and firm the affected area so don't be afraid to hit the weights.

Eating healthy and regular exercise will help you maintain a healthy weight which is a key factor in preventing cellulite. Not only that, but also to live a long, healthy life!

Say it! Mean it! Do it!
